I saw a comedian recently who was doing a thing about where was the emergency broadcast system when the planes hit the towers on 9/11? You have to wonder what sort of emergency they are holding out for.

we have a siren, unfortunately, it only sounds in the next valley, 20 miles away....around the nuclear power plant. by the time it is on the EBS, it'll be too late.....

Now, I consider myself prepared.
I was on vacation when an alert went off -near Nuclear reactors - I think it's a little late by the time the alert sounds in that case.

Hey everyone... the reason they'll need to use radio is because all the mobile phones will be clogged up with people panicking. TV stations are too easy to knock out. You can set up a radio transmitter quickly from more or less anywhere if someone's taken over your main studio. (And you can build an AM receiver with simple stuff if you know what you're doing. Try watching TV if the electricity supply is off or it got hit by a brick or a bit of tree or whatever!)
And besides - this stuff isn't to warn you that something's gonna happen. It's to contact you after the event if you've been lucky (?) enough to survive.
