TMI Tuesday..........

Well, my hard work and long hours are finally paying off this month. Although I must admit waiting till the last minute is nerve racking...Tomorrow I'll probably pull my second in a row 12 hour day...But Thats OK.....3 deliveries and a bonus.......CHA-CHING!!!!

Did you ever wonder where certain words came from?....Check these out.

DEBONAIR...French for "of good air". In the Middle Ages, peoples health was judged partly by how they smelled. A person that gave off "good air", was considered healthier and happier.

GYMNASIUM...Meant "to train naked" in ancient Greece, it's where athletes wore little or nothing!

CARNIVAL...The literal meaning is "Flesh Farewell"..This refers to Pre-Lenten fasting, just like Mardi Gras.

DAISY...Comes from "days eye". When the Sun comes out, it opens it's yellow eye.

UKELELE...In the 1800's, an English sailor gave such an enthusiastic performance with this instrument, that he was nicknamed "Ukelele"--'little jumping flea' in Hawaiian. He went on to become famous all over the world.

GUNG HO...Means "work together" in Chinese. During WWII a unit called Carlson's Raiders used it as their motto. Since then it was associated with any enthusiastic soldier.

BALLOT...Italian term for small ball or pebble...Italian citizens used to vote by casting a small pebble or ball into several boxes.

JIGGLE...Refers to the dance...The Jig!

GENUINE...Originally meant "placed on the knees". In ancient Rome, a father legally claimed his newborn child by sitting in front of his family, and placing the child on his knee.

CAB... Old Italian word for goat. The first carriages for public hire were so bouncy, that they looked like goats romping on a hillside.

POOPED...Thats what the G-Man is.....Good Night... Peace!

Oh I was having my doubts on GYMNASIUM so I just had to look ... and I think I found the same source you did. I should have know better then to doubt the great one.
Most entertaining G.

You know I have a certain air about me too sometimes, especially after having baked beans. Glad your nightmare is coming to an end and there is a pot of gold at the end of it. Have a great day G.

Mona,
Mojo has come to mean many things over the years...Lisa was a right, it does have a sexual power connotation, but originally it was African in origin, and it was a little type of a Voodoo bag with different objects in it that had magical powers!!

Mona.....?
Your on a roll Baby!!

Lisa my dear....
You so funny!
You and Mona act like sisters...
I wonder how they say Yenta in Hindi?
xoxoxbitemexoxoxox

Good Morning Cazzie,
I like to learn something new every day!

No Galen it is not. Yenta means a woman who has been a busybody and a gossip...
& I know why you call me that... just because I played one at Serena's...
But that was a game really & I didnt mean a word there...

Serena... where are you...Help!

Morning G-man! Once again you are just full of interesting facts :) Thanks for sharing.

Something about being naked and exercising doesn't sound right. I know in Greece that is how they did their Olympics and such but that seems rather dangerous.

Now for some really interesting reading try looking up the word Dork.. It has a meaning I bet no one ever knew about. Gives a whole new meaning to the word - dingledork

all righty then enough TMI from me

Morgy sits and watches the corn grow that is about all there is to do in the Husker State you know hehehe, oh besides football

Charles said...

Let's see if we can do what Mona was doing...

G's desire would be to have a Gymnasium, Gung Ho with Genuine Jiggling Ukelele women. He'd like it to be a Debonair Cab ride dropping Ballots on strings, going to his Carnival, before he's too Pooped or pushing up Daisies.

MONA said...

CHARLES!!!

I'm shocked!

snowelf said...

G-man,

How I love words!! This is an excellent TMI for a Tuesday!!

I wanna play too!!

At a carnival, I met the debonair Galen who had just returned by cab from the gymnasium.
In an attempt to get his name on the ballot for the most gung ho blogger, he whipped out his genuine ukelele and jiggled to a round of "Please don't eat the daisies." until he was pooped.

:)

I'm here to whore myself out. I'm tied for 3rd place and desperately need your votes. Please vote thumbs up here. I love you all!

J Morgetron said...

It's okay G-Man. I can still feel the love.

Well ... off to hoe the garden and feed the chickens!

xobitewhat?xo

sisters huh?
yes, the resemblance is uncanny,
misterknowitall...

Mona, Galen thinks he's jewish.
or Yiddish or something.
he always has, and he prides himself
on knowing more jewish words
than i'll ever know...
but if you ask a jewish person
something about jewish history,
or spelling or for a definition or
what's in a rugelach recipe, or something,
you'll usually get a different explanation
with each person you ask...
and of course, everyone you ask
will think that their answer
is the definitive answer...
so again, i think a yenta is someone
who likes to talk
and talk and talk and talk...
tho i do remember in Fiddler On The Roof,
that Yenta was Yentah the matchmaker,
so who knows...i guess G-man knows
we can both talk a blue streak...

MONA said...

JavaJazz...I guess I shall take your definition then;I certainly dont like the other...
& Yes we are sisters in the name of Humanism..((((HUGS))).

Galen.. all right, Galen..Yenta I am...

Now We get to the similarities between Mona, and JavaJazz....
They are both very Humanistic..
They are both highly Intelligent..
They are both Beautiful..
They can both Type like the wind..
They are more apt to give comforting words to others, rather than go on about themselves..
They both are highly protective of me!!!
They have both come to my aid when they thought that I was under attack!!
They are both loved by The G-Man...Very Much..
They are both uncannily perceptive...

Thanks for being there for me.....Galenxomrxjjxox

javajazz said...

yes, Galen,
you COULD have thought of that....
but i did.
(nyuk nyuk!)

Mona, perhaps there is a similarity
after all...maybe you were a jewish mother
in another lifetime, worrying about
my health and well being like that.
Galen's right, you are a mensch
and a caring person...
sorry, you'll have to dictionary
or Google "mensch"...

(Google...haha, whoever made up these silliest words...you gotta love the innovator's humour.)

Strumpet said...

{sings}...Dear Yenta...DON'T make him gentle...

{stops singing}

He gave such an enthusiastic performance with his instrument, huh?

Please send him and his dork my way.

And you can tell him I'm totally Gung Ho.

Yeah, I'm an enthusiastic soldier when it comes to enthusiastic performances.

We can be enthusiastic together about him casting his ball into my box.

I'll genuinely place myself on my knees and report for duty.

P.S. I'm stealing this:

'xoxoxbitemexoxoxox'

I hope you don't mind.

Mmmm...I love rugelach...

javajazz said...

why, Strumpie, didnt you like
xoxosuckonmytoesxoxo?
oops sorry, my bad,
i meant xoxosnackonmytoesxoxo.
gottacleanitup for the family audience.

ha! you remember
matchmaker matchmaker make me a match?
actually, now that this all caused a flashback
(i hate when i remember parts of my childhood
i had neatly tucked away in the non remembering
part of my brain...) i think i WAS cast as Yenta
in our camp production of Fiddler...
i think i was 12. this might all be a lie.
i cant remember...
but i never forget the broadway musicals,
the lyrics the music,
dass fo sure...
you would love my home made rugelach,
especially right from the oven...
i dont like to brag but it really is good.

MONA said...

Lisa...Yes I could have been your mother and also the mother of so many ever out there...
Infact I am the mother of all mothers...

Strange..EVERYBODY calls me that... even my siblings used to call me Mother Mona...but that was as in Mother Superior at our school... Because they thought I was like moral science..

Strumpet said...

OHhhh...

...if I were a rich man...

...I'd fly to Canada to snack on Lisa's rugelach...

...all day long I'd biddy-biddy-bum...

...eating rugelach...

...if I were a wealthy man!

Yeah, I think participating in Fiddler at some part in one's life is pretty much...

...Tradition!
