Years in the making. THIS was Ludwig's Masterpiece.
He hadn't conducted on stage in 12 years, and was petrified!
Upon completion, he sank to the podium sobbing. The silence
meant that Vienna hated it.
Suddenly, his Contralto walked over and turned him around.
The audience was jubilant!
He couldn't hear the cheers.....
He could hear the music in his head. Sorta like a nagging spouse!
I remember this anecdote from my Sophomore Music Appreciation class.

I really like your musical genius 55! I love Beethoven, and it's hard to imagine someone doing that with a hearing impairment.

I remember hearing (sorry, Ludwig)this same tale from my music teacher, Mr. Morgan, in Grade 12. Imagine creating something you only ever hear in your head? Truly remarkable. Loved it, Galen!
My 55: Astounded
I welcome all Odes to Joy, and this one was an anecdote I hadn't heard--probably because I was in the dorky Creative Writing class, instead of the dorky Music Appreciation class. Like Talon, I find it amazing that the man could write what he wrote, yet never hear it.Loved your educational 55, G.

A roaring in his ears when he first started becoming deaf... he thought of suicide! Thank God he found the strength to continue creating his music. NICE and sweet 55 this week!

That story has always touched my heart so. I think I may have learned about it in Music Appreciation class also! My appreciation for this most beautiful of all your 55s is shown now..... with a silent bow.
