Thursday Southern Portrait.....

I've done a lot of travelling about The South, and a
mystery to me is Boiled Peanuts. (Pronounced Bowled Peanuts)
They seem like such an interesting treat whilst being
near them, but upon purchasing them, ANY flavor mind you,
what the real mystery is...Why do I keep buying them?
They are mushy, gritty, and they SUCK!
They are merely an excuse to wash them down with Cold Beer!
I should stick to...
Grits, Fried Pickles, Hush Puppies, Black-Eyed Peas, Hoppin John,
Fried Okra, Gumbo, Gator, Catfish, Collard Greens,
Raccoon Kabobs (Ring-Tailed Suprise), Possom, Craw-Daddy's,
Pecan Pie (Pronounced Pea Kahn, a Pee-Can is what a Trucker uses),
ANYTHING Southern other than Boiled Peanuts!!!!
I do love The South though (Except for Termites, Chiggers, Cotton-
Mouths, Copper-Heads, and Jimmy Swaggart!)
See you Thursday 8:00 PM EST.
(Exceptin from 9-10 PM, thats when an ALL New Swamp People airs
on The History Channel....:-))

My old man is addicted to Swamp People--sigh. If there's a full head of teeth in the whole bunch it's only by combining them and taking a group count. And yes, boiled peanuts are weird. Fried okra, however, rules. I'm not eating raccoon though--we have a deal--I don't eat them and they don't try to eat me. See you tomorrow, G.

I totally agree about the bowled peanuts. Blech. But you forgot to mention palmetto bugs on the hate list. Five times the size of a normal cockroach, and they FLY!

I've been in Georgia and Florida since January 5th .. had my first fried pickles, bbq oysters, shrimp right from the boat, blueberry beer and don't look forward to leaving for home tomorrow. No, I didn't succumb to the boiled peanuts.

Don't think I've ever had boiled peanuts, dry roasted yes. My favourite nuts are Cashews. :)

See you tomorrow. x

And sometimes truckers pee in bowls, the ones the pay-nuts are bowled in.

Not a southerner amongst you, huh? :) *shakes head*

I suppose they're an acquired taste if you didn't grow up on them like I did: they're better cold when the weather is HOT! And for the record, my father-in-law was from the U.P. in Michigan and he LOVED them! Then again, I say Pee-can and he'd always tell me that's what he carried in his boat. I then referred to them as "nuts".

One slight correction Sir: they're peanuts, not a bowling ball. Sounds more like "Bald" peanuts for those with a deeper southern accent than even I have. :) Probably why baby Bro thought they were "bald headed p-nuts".

Oooo. I hate boiled peanuts. But love lots of that other Southern stuff. Wish I had me some grits about now.

Guess what!! It is Thursday and my 55er is up! I thought you would be glad...D

Just putting "boiled" next to peanuts tells me I'd probably not like them. Maybe they're an acquired taste? One I know in advance I'll never acquire myself :)

Nope don't see them on my top 10 of favorite southern treats
You can have them and the raccoons

Actually, the pronunciation is between boiled and bold - a sound I've never heard a northerner reproduce accurately. But man, I love me some fresh boiled peanuts. If they are done right, they are never mushy or gritty.

And also - in Georgia, everyone I know says pe-CAHN pie - emphasis on the second syllable with a broad a.
