Safron Indoor Beer Butt Chicken...

Hi Everybody...
I dreamed this up earlier this week, and decided
to experiment. I'm sure you have heard of Beer Butt
Chicken. Thats when you open up a beer of your choice,
then you set a whole chicken over it, and pop it on
a grill until it's cooked to a Golden Brown. The boiling
beer also cookes and flavors and moistens the delicious
yard bird.
I didn't have a beer in a can, so I filled up a Vernors
Ginger Ale can, and it worked just fine!!!
Today I didn't feel like making a charcoal fire, so I
layed the chicken in my cast iron skillet and cooked it in
the oven at 350 degrees for 2 hours.
I sliced up 3 Idaho Russetts and a huge Vidalia Onion and
laid them on the bottom of the skillet.
I seasoned the chicken with Garlic Powder, Cumin, Alderwood
Smoked Sea Salt, and Safron!!! Do you see that marvelous
bag of Safron? My daughter sent me that from Istanbul!
Over here a few sprigs of that Floral Gold costs about 5 Bucks
for a tiny vial. That whole bag cost FIVE BUCKS!!!
The last pic is the finished product...It Was Delicious!!!
I Need A Nap!
Peace...!!!

Sounds like some good eating. Poor chicken didn't look so good at the start, but the finished product looks yummy.

Canadian beer!!! You are such an honorary hoser, Galen. Take off, eh? :)

PS - I love it when you cook for us. We do beer butt chicken on the grill all the time, never thought of doing it this way. Thanks for the idea. :)

The chicken looks like it's ready to break into a...dare I say it?...chicken dance! That looks so scrumptious! And imagine only $5 for the saffron! That's mind-boggling!

What a perfect one-skillet dinner that was Galen!

mmmm send me some!! I saw some ceramic dishes that are meant to work like the beer can butt. With them you can use any liquid and I think they're also supposed to help the chicken or turkey stay upright. Anyway saw them on Amazon.com ;-)

It looks absolutely heavenly! And I'm so jealous of that bag of saffron. Think of all the paella I could make with that........

I was SOOO jealous of the bag of Saffron, I almost missed that awesome finished product. YUM! I need to make blog-friends with someone in Istanbul!

I played, but had to do so from a conference room so I couldn't comment on yours until today... sorry I'm late!

At first glance of that bag of saffron I thought you must have mortgaged your house for it. Lucky you to have a saffron smuggler in the family. How come you didn't invite me over for supper? Sleep well.

Sounds delicious!

Did your chicken just lay boiled eggs in the process of being cooked?

Wow! That looks awesome. And your marinade comes from where I live my friend. Got the main brewery in town here. :)

I was looking for saffron last week to make paella and couldn't even find it at the grocery store. You are so right on price too. You could sell that for half the price of the groceries and still make a killing. Sweet!
