Throwing his Bill-Fold and keys on the counter,
Fred opened up the Ice Box, grabbed a cold one,
punctured two holes in the top, then layed down
on the Davenport.
A scene from the 50's...
Know any Old Timers that still say these things?
Other than ME?

Oh yeah, grandpa has a davenport. I always thought there was something special about his couch to get such a cool name. I tried calling mine a davenport but it didn't feel right. I still hear bill fold, cold one and ice box often but I live in a town that Los Angeles forgot after the 1950s.
He looks so relaxed. I've never heard a couch called a davenport ever - not sure if this is age or one of those American/Canadian things, like how we call it pop and Americans call it soda.
What IS a davenport? Was it a trade name?
everyone is hung up on the davenpoort...i just think punching 2 holes in the can is cool...ha. nice 160 G!
I grew up in the 40s/50s .... everyone had a davenport didn't they?
Oh man come live in my neck of the woods. My sister in law owns a davenport, and the kids in the this town drink their pop that way, then there is the guy that wanders all over town visiting every store until he gets kicked out, he could be that guy in the photo, but that's another story.
Dad always had a billfold...and called blue jeans "dungarees".
I've heard an old aunt use the term davenport, but around these parts, that's the name of a local artist: Ray Davenport. :)
Good one!
Yep. In fact, I sometimes call it an Ice Box!
Poor beer can openers....now just relegated to the antique stores. I remember the days before tabbed pop tops. Great Sunday 160 flashback to the '50's, G. Thanks for playing along.
and he was wearing dungarees!
ummmm.. cheers?
You aren't no old timer!!
Sunday Hugs xox
I always learn some thing new of your time :P !!
My antiquated spouse and I use those terms all the time--hey, *we* know what we mean. We also play albums on the record player (me), or sometimes, the victrola (him.)
Retro looks relaxing, doesn't it? :)
Very cool! I hated those fridges (w/ no shelves on the door) the second is grand
what a good 160.
Effective, good scene.
Sure, of the grandparent variety. Although billfold is still a commonly used word, at least around here.
