Thursday Portrait.....

Hi Everybody...
As a Catholic Youth growing up, Lent was the beginning of a period of Sparadic Meatless days within a 40 day time frame! Salmon patties, Tuna/Noodle casserole, Fish Sticks...!! This, and giving up Chocolate for 40 days, PROVED beyond a shadow of doubt, that I was Pearlie Gate material!!
Anyway, Since this is the day after Fat Tuesday, or as we say in Michigan, Packzi (poonch-key) Day. I got a Great deal on crawdaddy's at Kroger! I bought a package today, but after cleaning, them the plate seemed so sparse without all their armour.
I made a stuffing with bread crumbs, finely chopped celery, scallions, the chopped crayfish, some oriental fish sauce, some liquid and two eggs as a binder, and made stuffed Porcini Mushrooms. And as if that wasn't enough...I made a Salmon Loaf!
Talk about a Retro Lenton Feast! Although I can say that we never got stuffed mushrooms when I was a kid. The Shroons were a hit, everyone hated the Salmon Loaf. I gotta tell you though, it was Awesome!
See you all tomorrow...
Peace...!!!

My ex grew up in a Michigan Catholic family and I always thought it was funny that he and most other Catholics I knew had fishsticks and things made with canned fish on Fridays instead of all the wonderful ways you can have fresh seafood. We ate seafood a lot growing up, but generally as broiled fish or boiled shrimp or roasted clams/oysters. Did the Pope specify that it had to be processed fish?

it is so funny, my sister called me last night because she went to ash wednseday services, i swear we haven't practiced our religion since we were kids, i never even had my catechism, anyway she told me about the papers they passed around for what you are going to give up for the next 40 days.
she was so upset she said her husbands said ,read the bible every day and pray, her other friend's paper said to be generous for 40 days, her said to not watch soap operas for 40 days!!

I said Baby Jesus died on the cross and you can't not watch soap operas for 40 days!! shame on you.

i tell yeah bless her heart for taking church seriously again!! I just love faith, and the fact that I don't watch soaps!!

By the way Thom has created a guest book for Dr. John on his blog. If I could put a link in the comment I would, there is one on my post from Tuesday. I think Stony River may have one as well.

Packzi show up this time of year in our part of Massachusetts as well. Even though I also grew up Catholic (and ate WAY more than my share of fish sticks and tuna casserole), I'd never had one until we moved here several years ago. It must be an acquired taste, because I just couldn't get past the feeling of the enamel melting off my teeth. My first packzi was my last packzi. Your mushrooms and salmon loaf sound ever so much better!

my nine yr. old was reading this over my shoulder. She stopped at no chocklate for 40 days. Her comment, 'it is torture to not eat chocklate for 40 days.!" ☺
