Retro Wednesday.....

As always, I apologize for the piss poor picture quality.
The mirror that I am holding, sat on my grandmother's dresser for as long as I can remember. It is made out of Bakelite, pronounced Bay-Ka-Lite!
Bakelite was the worlds First true synthetic plastic. Also it was moldable.
Bakelite was very durable, but it could Not be remelted or remolded. It was used for jewelry, radios, telephones, and even hand held makeup mirrors!
To this day 'Retro' Bakelite in Mint condition, is worth beacoup bucks.
Mines worth a lifetime of fond memories.
As we all shall be someday...Fond Memories!
Peace...!!!

my bake-a-lite radios are some of my favorites! not real sure if they still use that stuff for anything...think maybe the lite-weight plastics did away with good ole bake-a-lite.....shame....

You just keep on pulling stuff out of that museum of yours, don't you? Wow. Just wow. I know what Bakelite is but I don't think I've ever owned anything made of it.

I remember eating with bakelite-handle tableware as a kid. I think my dad accumulated the set piece by piece, from the gas station. "Filler-up, get a free fork!"

Bay-ka-lite
As an working electrician(once an electrician always an electrician) in one of of my other lives I installed many a bridle switch or receptacle plate.
Fond memory? Mixed and a little cloudy with the booze.

It was a phenolic that was heat resistant and somewhat brittle by today's standards- generally cast..

sniff the Bakelite it will forever retain the heavy odor of carbon and oil.

Better to have stuff from the past before you become the past because what we have today is all geared to be pretty much throwaway eh?
