Retro-Wednesday......

Ahhhh Stroh's.
Some of you may remember when Coors Beer was only distributed West of the Mississippi. During that same time, Detroits own Stroh's Beer was only sold in 17 states East of the Mississippi. It was quite a 'coup' to be seen sipping a Coors at a Summer picnic in Michigan pre-1980. As it was just as 'cool' to be chuggin on a Stroh's out West.
Stroh's was quite a cultural phenomena in it's day, they stayed afloat during Prohibition by making "Near Beer", and by making Stroh's Ice Cream. At one time after Stroh's bought the Schaeffer Brewing Co. they were the 3rd largest brewer in the country circa 1978. But hard times hit, and in 1999 The Pabst Brewing Co. bought them out. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Anyway, thats my brass Stroh's belt buckle from the sixties in the top pic.
I loved Stroh's, but since it is no longer brewed with Detroit River water, it just doesn't taste the same. I can remember what we always said after tipping a few Stroh's Beers at a fraternity party back at college..." Enjoy it now, cause tomorrow you'll have a 'Fire Brewed Asshole'."!!
Peace...!!!

Hmmm. In light of your last sentence, I don't think I'd want to drink that. Yowzer!

I remember the name Stroh's Beer, but I can't place it in what context it was....

Anyway...I am a teetotaler... & I don't smoke either...

In fact I like to quench my thirst only with tall glass of water!

mmmmm water!!

We always asked for a panther piss and the bartender knew to come with a Strohs.

I do believe that Strohs beer is the reason I switched to hard liquor.

Ever take the brewery tour with the free samples at the end? I remember folks, men especially, pleading for jobs at the brewery, not because the pay was good but rather employee's had beer taps in the break rooms.

I was 19 when they lowered the drinking age to 18 in Michigan..Strohs is what I drank! Whenever a truck driver was going West, he'd bootleg Strohs out to them, and bring back Coors.. I also have a Schitz belt buckle, made from the copper kettle they used to use before going to stainless steel (1976). It's numbered and quite collectable!

Where did your script disappear???

I hope the ghost of the past has not returned to me, the way your 55ves used to disappear on me in the past!

Oh man, Strohs and I did not get along. I usually got a not so nice headache and boy I needed to stay near the facilities. Funny thing, I was not near as bad if it were draft rather than bottled.

Ah yes, the Coors/Strohs thing was funny. Neither Coors nor Strohs is all that fantastic (I know blasphemy) but yet it was special to have Coors here. I heard the same about Colorado, etc.

I once got pretty darn wasted on a 16 ounce can of Coors. Of course it had nothing to do with the fact that I had just given blood...

I did not follow beer... I had no idea Pabst bought Strohs. I knew they no longer used Detroit river water. Ah such good memories.

LMAO-Gman that was my first beer! My Dad was a HUGE Stroh's drinker so that's what I snuck out of the fridge at home. You're right about the taste-I bought a case about 10 years ago (nostalgia) and it sucked....True about that next morning, though....
