....I Feel So Broke-Up, I Want To Go Home

Even if we have no musical talent, can't play an instrument, or carry a tune in a bucket, music is an intregal part of all of our lives. You may remember the first chords you learned on a guitar, the first time you finger plinked 'chop-sticks', or your solo at the Christmas pageant.
Whatever the case may be, certain songs bring back different memories, good or bad!

Growing up with grand-parents, it wasn't automatic that I could drive the family car when I turned 16. In fact I couldn't. I worked at a job after school and in the summer for ONE dollar an hr. I had to rely on rides from friends and family for years. I did buy a motorcycle, but you couldn't ride it that often, so I scrimped and saved and when I was almost19 I could finally afford a car that was reliable...A 1963 Chevrolet Bel-Air automatic with a 283 V-8. I paid the whopping total of 300 dollars for that fine ride.....So here I was, after 4 years of begging rides, alone in my very own car... Hot summer day, windows down, I eased out of the driveway toward everywhere and nowhere. I turned on the radio, found my station, and cranked it up....

"Lines form on my face and hands, Lines form on my left and right. I'm in the middle, without any plans, I'm a boy and I'm a man...I'm 18, and I don't know what I want, I'm 18"........

To this day when I hear that Alice Cooper tune, I think of me being alone, cruising in my own FIRST car, 18 and confused every day!!
The first girl that I ever kissed was a girl named Suzie G. One Friday night after a football game me and my buddy Edd, (who is now gone) met a couple of girls at the local pizza parlor. We talked for a while, I was my normal charming self, and in no time we were invited to a party. Well the party was quite boring, but no one wanted to go home quite yet, as me and Edd together were quite a duo. Loud, funny, charming, and I had home-made wine to boot...AND my grandparents were out of town for the week-end!
Yeah, you know the scenario, back to the house, down a few glasses of vino, turn on the stereo, and find a room to make-out in. The album that I put on was The Beach Boys..Pet Sounds. What a great make-out album. And make-out we did, but to this day whenever I hear Sloop John-B, I think of that first magical night, when every boys fantasy finally comes true...

I'm not going into every tune that rings a bell with my memories, but those two songs always bring a smile to my face, and I drift back to a happy time, with no worries, and an exciting uncertain future.
Do any of you have a song that holds a special place in your heart, or in your memories? Maybe it's a more recent tune, or a tune that reminds us of another time and place. I really enjoy the feedback that I get from all of my new friends, it means a lot to me, and I appreciate it.

....Now for the tie-in. My last three posts have been about ...Sex..Drugs..and Rock & Roll !!
After this I'll have to think of a new series,( LIME )......but for now, Peace...G-Man

There is one song that takes me back to when I was really young with the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations". I remember decorating the tree, my dad bought these funky new ornaments and we had angel hair (aka fiber glass) all over the tree. Whenever I hear that song it take me back to one of my favorite memories. I bought a comb for my dad for his gift. He kept that comb with him for a long long time.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane Galen.

Maybe tomorrow I'll think of more ;o)

G-Man said...

That was sweet Jillie, I think songs do that more than anything..You even remembered the gift!..G

LOL, i shoulda known! good series there, g-man. actually i did the song post twice...wow, probably over a year ago now.

'heaven' by bryan adams.....at the dirve-in with that gorgeous sean who made trigonometry bearable merely by his ultra fine presence....sigh....

also, 'leader of the band' by dan fogelberg. it came out right after my grandfather died. he is the one i inherited my guitar from and he fronted a couple of bands in his heyday. i bawled my eyes out the first time i heard that song. still makes me a little misty even 25 years later....it's all good though..

G-Man said...

Well, it's the first time that I've heard it. And I love it. Thanks Michelle Trini Limey..

( no copyrite infringement on the 'series' tag I hope)

I love music, always have. For me the ones that bring back the most memories were from the 70's. Peter Frampton, Frampton Comes Alive. Eric Carmen, All By Myself. Boston, Kansas... Hearing any of those groups, especially the albums from 1976/1977 and I so remember the good times from back then.

Music makes everything go around.

G-Man said...

Barman, I've seen all those groups at Pine Knob, In the good old days when you could bring you own cooler in..remember that?

I remember being in my room one night when something fresh&new came through my little AM radio on CKLW.
It was a new band from England called the Beatles, the song was I Want to Hold Your Hand.
Song after song from their first American album was a hit, we couldn't get enough.
My heartbreak song was MacArthur Park by Richard Harris.

Later after getting discharged from the service my friends asked me to go to a concert at Eastern Michigan University to see a band called Genesis with Peter Gabriel.
It forever changed how I felt about music.Gabriel wore costumes, the music had odd time changes, the lyrics were mystical and the light show with it's colors blew me away.
The last big show we saw was the last Pink Floyd show, it was the first time I'd seen one of my all time favorite bands.
They were awesome and brought back many memories.
I'm still a Genesis fan and Gabriel is one of my favorite artists.
But I don't live in the past, Nickelback is in constant rotation on my cd&DVD player as well as other artists from today's music scene.
Sorry for the long post.
Great post galen, thanks for sharing your memories.

Wow...Genesis with Peter Gabriel...LOVE that music as well. You know I think we're from a very similar generation.

Another one is by America and I was in Jr. High...Sister Golden. I had a crush on a guy that was older than me. He was in High School and I was only in 8th grade. Everytime I hear that song, I think of Tom S. He was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hawt!

G-Man said...

TC, the great thing about being our age is that ALL music is our music. We were around before Elvis sang 'Hound Dog'.Before...Motown...disco..new age..grunge...rap...ALL music is our music. We listen and adopt what we like, and disregard the rest. If you like it...it's all good. Us Old Guys Rock! There are a lot of great contemporary Bands, I like Nickleback myself......G

good morning jillie.
There is a tribute band called The Musical Box who perform early Genesis with a guy who sounds just like Petah! if you can ever see them.

I love the Doors even though they were before my time. Jim Morrison was a rock god! He lights my fire!

I have has a crush on Chuch Negron since I was a little girl. I love, love, love Momma Told Me Not To Come. That should be my theme song.

Most of my memorable songs that remind me of someone special are all crappy 80's songs.

I've missed you but I made some money so Mr. Sign doesn't kick me out for not paying my share. More good news is that money also keeps me blogging (have to pay for the internet access).

"Riders on the Storm"... was Our Song... perfect for those "funky, far-out" positions on the floor with my first BF. I listened to it forever after, always remembering that very first time...

Now that I'm back with my first BF after these many years, (yep, really) it's still the best makeout song ever.

Man alive, how exactly old IS everybody over here, anyway? HA HA

Surrender by Cheap Trick.

My parents were SO into them when I was growing up and used to go see them all the time. I'd be so jealous cos I couldn't go with.

Me and my bro would run around the house all the time singing...

'Mommy's alright...Daddy's alright...they just seem a little weird...Surrender...Surrender...'

One day, my dad recorded my brother and I singing it on a reel-to-reel recorder. It was like the cutest thing ever. Cos I had to be about 8, and my bro around 6.

I just wish I still had that reel-to-reel. I don't know what happened to it.

Another song that means a lot to me is the song Roxanne by the Police. It was on the radio once when my first boyfriend and I had this intense make-out session in his car and somehow became our 'song' after that. I think of him every time I hear it in a really fond way. We were together for over five years.

And you get one more...

Closer, by Nine Inch Nails....cos if that's not a lovesong...I don't know what is. It's the best lovesong ever. And if I ever get married...it's gonna be my wedding song.
