As always, I apologize for the piss poor picture quality.
The mirror that I am holding, sat on my grandmother's dresser for as long as I can remember. It is made out of Bakelite, pronounced Bay-Ka-Lite!
Bakelite was the worlds First true synthetic plastic. Also it was moldable.
Bakelite was very durable, but it could Not be remelted or remolded. It was used for jewelry, radios, telephones, and even hand held makeup mirrors!
To this day 'Retro' Bakelite in Mint condition, is worth beacoup bucks.
Mines worth a lifetime of fond memories.
As we all shall be someday...Fond Memories!
Peace...!!!
(Too Maudlin?)

ReplyDeletemy bake-a-lite radios are some of my favorites! not real sure if they still use that stuff for anything...think maybe the lite-weight plastics did away with good ole bake-a-lite.....shame....

I remember eating with bakelite-handle tableware as a kid. I think my dad accumulated the set piece by piece, from the gas station. "Filler-up, get a free fork!"
